Yorkshire Winner For HorseHage National Competition!

karenKaren Wareing from Wakefield in Yorkshire was the lucky winner of the national competition run by HorseHage throughout last year. She entered the competition at the Bramham International Horse Trials last summer and her prize was six months of feed and forage for her horse from HorseHage and Mollichaff.

Our feed advisor, Rebecca Murray, travelled to Karen’s livery yard which is near Tadcaster, and did a full nutritional assessment on her horse, Tammy.

Tammy is a 16.3hh, 20-year-old mare who just enjoys light work nowadays, due to being a little stiff from arthritis in her hind legs.

Said Karen: “We used to do dressage, a little jumping and some pleasure rides but now we just stick to some light hacking.”

Karen explained that Tammy could sometimes be a fussy feeder so Rebecca recommended trying Timothy HorseHage which is made from Timothy grass rather than Ryegrass. It is higher in fibre and lower in protein than many other grasses and so is particularly suitable for leisure horses and ponies, native ponies, veterans and those that are resting, convalescing or laminitic. It has a different ‘nose’ to ryegrass, making it highly palatable and ideal for picky eaters.

Mollichaff Condition was also suggested as Tammy can drop a little weight during the winter months. Mollichaff Condition is a complete feed made from a balanced blend of alfalfa, dried grass, oat straw, fibre pellets, barley, soya flakes, soya oil and mint as well as Yea-sacc® and a prebiotic, plus vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is highly digestible and high in fibre and oil and low in starch, and because it is a complete feed, no other hard feed is required – just plenty of good forage.
